In the south of Portugal, the Algarve’s west coast offers a huge variety of secluded little bays which are often enclosed by bizarre rock formations. Just around the corner, the Algarve’s south coast holds many long and sandy beaches which are less exposed to winds and waves, therefore it offers a perfect escape for those who seek easier surfing conditions or just want chill on the beach.
The next region to the north is Alentejo. There are many long stretched beaches which hold a big selection of uncrowded quality surf breaks. But also some of the quiet and picturesque small towns are worth a visit. One of these towns, “Vila Nova de Milfontes” is a perfect example of a coastal Portuguese village. Narrow allies offer a big variety of good fish restaurants and the laid-back vibe invites its visitors to stay for a while and discover some of the nicely decorated shops and bars.
A bit north of town “Praia do Malhao” holds some great sandbanks which are often uncrowded. Another hour drive to the north, just south of the city Sines, the beach of “Sao Torpes” offers a great surfing opportunity for medium to big swells and easterly winds.
If you still feel like exploring even more of beautiful Portugal, the capital Lisbon can be easily reached within less than two hours. So if you are looking to discover the urban side and party a bit, this is should be your next stop.
The western Algarve has diverse and spectacular landscapes, beautiful hidden bays and wide sandy beaches. It doesn´t matter if you´re looking for either action or relaxation, this location holds it. This area holds a variety of opportunities for surfers. Dozens of first-class beach breaks as well as a handful of well hidden, but uncrowded point breaks.
Kilometer long beaches like “Praia da Cordoama” offer not only various good peaks for all levels, but also offer plenty of space for spending some time at the beach.
A bit further north “Praia do Amado” attracts many surf beginners and van-travelers. There you can find plenty of space get comfortable in your camper as well as two surf schools which offer classes and rental gear.
Outside the summer months, the south coast is the place to be. It is sheltered from big waves and strong winds and offers a significantly milder climate than the west. Especially the area around the charming town of Lagos is worth a visit.
Walk through the narrow alleys of the beautiful harbor town of Lagos and get enchanted by the all-white architecture and the great variety of local restaurants and bars.
But also for those who want to spend some time away from the sea, the area around Lagos is a great place to be. Just a few kilometers inland hosts the beautiful mountain of “Monchique” with its thermal baths, hippy communes and amazing viewpoints which overlook big parts of southern Portugal.
